The Mermaid Café - A story by Jenny Pink with drawings by Francis Blake

Two people went for a swim in the sea...

Two people went for a swim in the sea. It was a lovely day. So they said - Let's swim a long way - so they swam out a long long way, further than they'd ever been before. Then they got tired, so they stopped for a rest on this lovely big flat rock. The sun was shining so they lay out and really relaxed.

After a while they got hungry & were thinking about what food they'd like and this mermaid came up out of the sea with a waitress's uniform on and said...

Would you like to see the menu?

Menu: 1, Boiled Sea Shells 2, Fried Sea Shells 3, Sea Shells au Naturelle

They grumbled a bit: There's not much selection here - it's all sea shells!

Well, the kitchens are at the bottom of the sea, you know! And this is an ecologically sound restaurant! - Okay, I'll have the fried sea shells - And I'll have the sea shells au naturelle - The fried sea shells might take a bit of time - said the mermaid, and dived back into the sea.

So they waited - and waited - but they didn't mind too much 'cos the sun was so lovely

First came up the sea shells au naturel and then came the fried sea shells flambéed at their rock. Well, the fried sea shells were lovely, but the sea shells au naturel were a bit crunchy (could't really eat them)

Technical note: Humans haven't got the right saliva. Mermaids have got special saliva that breaks down sea shells, makes them have a lovely taste - a bit like chocolate

The mermaid came up to have a chat...

The mermaid came up to have a chat. She said that the restaurant wasn't really busy as it was a bit far out, and not many people knew it was there.

We could get a party together and all come over. 'Cept my friends would have to come in a boat 'cos they can't swim all that way

Great, said the mermaid. It'll be fun. So then they paid and said goodbye to the mermaid and went home
